What is an Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitor | Basics / Tutorial

The electrolytic capacitor, or more correctly the aluminium electrolytic capacitor or aluminum electrolytic capacitor, is one of the most popular types used in electronic circuits. The electrolytic capacitor is one of the major types used for values above around 1 microfarad. It gains the name electrolytic capacitor from the fact that it uses an electrolyte.

In this video we look at the basic electrolytic capacitor, what it is, how it is manufactured, and we also look at the way an electrolytic capacitor is specified: its main specifications including value, tolerance, working voltage, ripple current and more.

We also take a look at where the electrolytic capacitor can be used in electronic circuits – positions where it is ideal for use and some electronic circuits where it is not so good. We take a look at the electrolytic capacitor characteristics, its advantages and disadvantages.

Sometimes aluminium electrolytic capacitors (aluminum electrolytic capacitors) have a bad name, so we look at its limitations and how it can be used to provide a long reliable and effective working life.
